Designing in Darwin

SONY DSCThe draft version of Too Many Cheeky Dogs was finalised this week at an ArtsAccess Australia funded design workshop in Darwin. Working with Melbourne-based literary designer Ruth Gruener, illustrator Dion Beasley and emerging author Johanna Bell learnt about the picture book design process. “It was amazing unpacking all the steps in a book’s design process. The structure of our book completely changed during the workshops,” said Johanna. Dion Beasley had an opportunity to learn new skills in picture book composition, drawing around text and digital illustration. Students at Anula Primary School where the workshop was hosted also had an opportunity to meet Dion and Johanna and quiz them about the book’s creation.
